Newly elected Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam yesterday said that the drive against illegal establishment under the area of DNCC will be launched from next week. He said this while visiting four water-logging areas and asked the official concerned to remove the illegal structures that causes water-logging in the areas.
He also said the reporters that the persons responsible for occupying various water bodies will be requested to make those free. Otherwise, the city corporation authorities will initiate stern action against them. He visited Shayesta Khan Avenue of Uttara, Ashkona Road, Banani and Suti canal of Badda in his first field visit since assuming office on Mar 10. “I have witnessed how poorly the people are suffering due to grabbing of canals.
I will urge earnestly those who are responsible for occupying or filling all sorts of water bodies including canals, to give up the grab. I have already ordered my officials to initiate stern steps,” added the mayor.
Atiqul Islam expressed firm commitment about recovery of the grabbed water bodies in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) areas. He also sought help from media in this regard, “for bringing something good to people”. On February 28, Awami League candidate Atiqul Islam won the by-election to the DNCC mayoral post by a huge margin.
On the same day, 38 general councilor candidates—and 12 female councilor contenders—won the polls held in 20 wards of the DNCC. The DNCC mayoral post fell vacant with the death of mayor Annisul Huq on November 30, 2017.
