President Abdul Hamid yesterday urged scouts to help keep children and youths away from drugs, bigotry, communalism, terrorism and militancy. The president said this while inaugurating the camping of the '10th Bangladesh and SAANSO Scout Jamboree' at National Scout Training Centre here. “Scouting can make the future generation of our country as modern, progressive and creative,” Hamid said.
The president also said scouts at first extend their hands in social development activities, including tree plantation, conservation of the environment and biodiversity, and then work to make people aware on how to curb the effects of climate change, flood, earthquake, landslide and fire.
Lauding the role of scouts who come forward in any crisis, Abdul Hamid said, “Scouts have been playing a vital role in combating natural disasters and providing humanitarian services.” He hoped their efforts will also be accelerated further in the days to come.
“The present government has set a target to make Bangladesh a middle-country by 2021 and a developed one by 2041. With the formulation and implementation of a government policy, Bangladesh has already become a country of low middle-income one.” To continue this development process, the new generation will have to develop themselves as skilled and filled with humanitarian values, he said.
“I urge the scout leaders to lead the next generation as to become skilled human resources for participating in the ongoing movement of Bangladesh,” he added.
The president also said, “Your stance will be against drugs, terrorism and militancy. You'll always have to boost the Liberation War spirit, patriotism, responsibility to the country and humanity in your minds.”
