Expatriate hacked to death
UNB, Habiganj
An expatriate was hacked to death allegedly by his neighbours following an altercation between two children of the families at Sadekpur village in Sunarughat upazila on Saturday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Lal Shah, 35, a Maldives expatriate and a resident of the village.
Quoting locals, Moniruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Chanurughat Police Station, said two children of Jabed Ali and Lal Shah locked into an altercation while playing togather. As a sequel of this incident, Jabed’s family members carried out an attack on Lal and other members of his family with sharp weapons. At one stage, they hacked Lal, leaving him critically injured.
Later, he was taken to Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead. Meanwhile, police arrested six people including Jabed Ali in this connection, the OC added.
Man crushed under train
UNB, Chandpur
A man died after being hit by a train while walking along the rail tracks putting headphones in the ears at Enayetpur in Haziganj upazila on Saturday morning.
The deceased was identified as Md Raton, 30, son of Md Kalu of Chakpailanpur village in Pabna sadar upazila.
Quoting eyewitnesses, Alamgir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Haziganj Police Station, said the accident took place when a Laksam-bound Demu train hit Raton, leaving him dead on the spot.
Meanwhile, the body was handed over to the victim’s family and a case of unnatural death was filed with the police station, the OC added.
15 injured as shops gutted

At least 15 shops were burned down and 15 people sustained burn injuries in a fire that broke out at a market in Moiddhya Baburhat in Sadar upazila on Saturday.
Witnesses said the fire ensued from an electric generator around 2:30 pm and soon spread to nearby shops.
On information, firefighters from Chandpur Fire Service and Civil Defense Station rushed there and doused the flame around 4pm. The affected shop owners said estimated loss incurred by the fire is about Tk 1.5 crore.
Two ‘drug traders’ arrested

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) early Sunday arrested two suspected drug traders along with 207 bottles Phensidylsyrup from Durgapur village of Sharsha upazila in the district.
The detainees were identified as Md Hassan Ali, 25, son of Ali Kodar and Md Faruk Hossain, 26, son of Abdul Kader of Durgapur village. Commanding officer of RAB-6 (Jashore camp) Shohel Pervez said acting on a tip-off they raided the house of Hassan Ali while Faruk was also present there and found 207 bottles of Phensidyl. The duo was handed over to Sharsha police after their arrest, he said.
Call to use bio-pesticides to produce safe food

Chief Scientific Officer of Entomology Department at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) Dr Debasish Sarker at a field day urged the farmers to use bio-pesticides for producing safe food.
“Bio-pesticides need to be used to produce safe food as 25 bio-pesticides already got registration,” he said.
He came up with the remarks at the field day arranged by BARI, Jamalpur at Barar Char village in Shreebardi Upazila here on Friday.
Chief Scientific Officer, BARI, Jamalpur, Dr Md Tariqul Islam presided over the function while Principal Scientific Officer of entomology division, BARI, Gazipur, Dr Nirmal Kumar Datta, Principal Scientific Officer of plant breeding division, BARI, Jamalpur, Dr Md Manjurul Kadir and its Principal Scientific Officer of entomology division Dr Md Abdul Mannan and Upazila Agriculture Officer, Shreebordi, Md Nazmul Hassan, among others, spoke.
