The Federal Network Agency, also known as Bundesnetzagentur or BNetzA has kicked off its multi-band frequency auction, making Germany the first European country to sell off spectrum in the 700MHz band for mobile broadband services, reports Telegeography.
The three incumbent network operators – mobile market leader Telefonica Deutschland, Deutsche Telekom-owned Telekom Deutschland (TD) and the UK’s Vodafone Germany – are bidding for a total spectrum package of 270MHz in the 700MHz, 900MHz, 1500MHz and 1800MHz frequency bands.
At the end of the third day (29 May), and after 25 rounds, total bids had so far reached EUR1.866 billion (USD2.04 billion), although the auction process is expected to take several weeks.
