Japan’s ambassador to Bangladesh, Hiroyasu Izumi, yesterday (Sunday) said his government is keen to enhance the bilateral relations between the two countries in areas of mutually benefit like trade and the economy. The ambassador was speaking to journalists after paying a courtesy call on Salman F Rahman, private industry and investment adviser to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, at the latter’s office in the capital.
“We have talked the investment plans of Japan here in Bangladesh in various infrastructural developments. Japan has decided to invest in several mega infrastructural projects at the two special economic zones in Narayanganj and Chattogram,” the ambassador said. The envoy noted that Bangladesh is the second largest recipient of Japan’s Overseas Development Assistance (ODA), which, he pointed out, underscores Japan’s commitment to the country’s development.
During the meeting, Salman F Rahman recalled that Bangladesh and Japan enjoyed a longstanding and unimpaired economic and diplomatic relationship. He conveyed to the ambassador PM Sheikh Hasina’s special attention to Bangladesh’s ties with Japan.
The government has taken a number of measures such as the introduction of a one-stop service for potential investors, reforms of existing laws and enactment of new ones, and ensuring effective coordination between government bodies to improve the ease of doing business and facilitate foreign investment in the country, he told the ambassador.
Salman F Rahman also sought Japan’s assistance in reaping the bright prospects of Bangladesh’s marine resources-based ‘blue economy’.
The adviser and the ambassador concluded their meeting with the commitment to work together closely for further developing the existing friendly relations along with agreeing to jointly visit the Matarbari coal power plant and deep-sea port project, the construction of which is being financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
