Bangladesh former skipper Khaled Mahmud Sujon on Sunday said that the first innings in Test is always important for the team to fare well in the match.

Sujon also said that the story of the Test would have been different if they could score 400 or more runs in the first innings against New Zealand.

Even though he has a little bit accusation about it, he is pleased to see the capability of their batsmen in the second innings.

Following Tamim Iqbal’s first innings 126 knock, centuries to all-rounder Mahmudullah Riyad and batsman Soumya Sarkar in the second innings that could not save the blushes of the shocking innings defeat.

“It would be easier for us if we could have scored such runs in the first innings of the Test,” said Khaled Mahmud Sujon.

“In Test, the first inning is always important, keeping it in mind, the boys have to bat. But I believe that batting in the second innings proved our capability,” Sujon told media at the national academy of the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur yesterday.

“We’re trying to play best cricket. There will be win-loss in the match but the process we followed that was obviously right,” he added.

Ruing for the lack of application in the first innings, the former captain said that they could have moved forward to the next Test with many positive things that will provide impetus in our mindset.

“A new environ is always tough. We all know batting on New Zealand condition is always difficult. It’s not an easy wicket as it seems. I think, it’s good that we applied ourselves in the second innings,” he said.

“We have tried our best to stay at wickets as much as possible and make runs. Big innings have come from the bats of Soumya and Riyad though we lost the Test by innings margin,” he also said.

“But I will say that we could be move forward to the next match with many more things. Then, I’ll say we had lacking of application in the first innings of Hamilton Test,” he added.

When asked about the squad for ICC World Cup, which will be roll onto the ground in between May-July in England and Wales, Sujon said that the team we have is enough from where they have to choose the 11 players for the World Cup.

“The team we have is in good stead. We have missed just Shakib (al Hasan) in the latest series. The team is well-balanced if Shakib is there. There is no need to take a bowler and a batsman,” Sujon, who is a director of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), said.

“The 15-16 member team we

have from where we have to find out the best combination for the World Cup. Saifuddin is very good inclusion, who played well in ODI series. Sabbir returns to form and Soumya scored in Test, that is important for us ahead of the World Cup,” he added.

“All are in runs. There are 15-16 players from where we have to do 11-men squad,” he concluded.
