‘Drug peddler’ hurt in ‘gunfight’

An alleged drug peddler was injured in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Palerhat in Sadar upazila early yesterday.
The injured was Shah Alam Mintu, a resident of Banchanagar village in the district town.
Police sources said being tipped off that a gang of drug peddlers, including Shah Alam Mintu and Hannan, were staying in Palerhat area, police launched a drive there in the dead of night. Sensing the presence of police, the criminals opened fire, forcing the law enforcers to fire back, triggering a gunfight. Mintu sustained bullet injures during the gunfight while his other associates managed to flee the scene. Later, police arrested Mintu from the spot.
He was rushed to Laxmipur Sadar Hospital under police custody. Three police constables were also injured during the incident. The law enforcers also recovered one LG, three rounds of bullet and huge Yaba tablets from the spot. Confirming the matter, Assistant Superintendent of Police Md Nasim said Mintu, a listed drug peddler, is wanted in several cases, including for drug peddling and murder, filed with Sadar police station.
Farmer killed over land dispute
A farmer was killed in an attack over a land-related dispute at Bhoga Bosontopur village in Singra upazila of Natoreon Saturday morning, reports UNB.
The deceased was Shamsul Haque, a resident of the village. Nasir Uddin Mondol, officer-in-charge of Singra police station, said Shamsul and Jahurul of the village had long been at loggerheads over the ownership of a piece of land. Following the issue, Jahurul along with his several supporters equipped with sharp weapons attacked Shamsul while he was taking tea in a tea stall at Mayer Bazar at the village in the morning, leaving him critically injured.
Father, son drown in Sirajganj
A man and his minor son drowned in the river Korotoa in Ullapara upazila of Sirajganj yesterday, reports BSS. The deceased were Hasu, 32, a worker of a sweets shop of Char Satbaria village in the upazila and his son Shakil, 8.Sub inspector of Ullapara Thana Alhaj Uddin said they drowned in the river yesterday noon neare the thana while they were taking bath. After their disappearance locals went for search and recovered their bodies from the river at about 2 pm.
