No room for bigotry in Bangladesh: President

President Abdul Hamid yesterday said there is no room for bigotry, fundamentalism, extremism and militancy in Bangladesh, reports UNB. “Apart from scouting, we have to lit the flame of patriotism among children so that they can love the country and its people. We have to inform them that communal harmony is Bangladesh’s decades-old tradition,” he said. The President said this while speaking at the inaugural function of the 44th Annual General Meeting of Bangladesh Scouts at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the city. Hamid said, “The people of all religions observe their own religious rituals freely. We have to inform them (children) that there’s no room for bigotry, fundamentalism, extremism and militancy on Bangladesh soil.” He went on saying, “The people of the country are peace-loving ones.  We have to inspire the young generation to maintain the tradition of communal harmony.” Mentioning that the climate change problem is a much-talked-about issue in the present-day world, Abdul Hamid said, “Climate change is a big threat to Bangladesh. So, I urge the scouts to play a special role in raising public awareness in this regard.” At the function, nine Scouts were conferred upon ‘Silver Tiger’, while 17 ‘Silver Hilsa’, two President’s Rover Scout Award and 122 President’s Scout Award. Bangladesh Scouts President Abdul Kalam Azad and Chief National Commissioner of Bangladesh Scouts Dr Md Mozammel Haque Khan also spoke on the occasion.
