Ruling Awami League MP from Gaibandha-1 Manjurul Islam Liton yesterday filed a petition with the High Court seeking anticipatory bail in an attempt to murder case filed against him for shooting a nine-year-old schoolboy in his constituency.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam confirmed The Independent about the filing of the bail petition by Liton.
“I have received a copy of the bail petition from Liton’s lawyer SM Ariful Islam. The hearing on the bail petition might be held on Monday (today),” he said, adding that his office would seriously oppose the petition during the hearing.
However, Liton’s lawyer declined to make any comment on the filing of the bail petition.
On October 2, Liton, also the Sundarganj upazila unit Awami League president, shot Shahadat Hossain Sourav, son of Saju Mia of Gopalcharan village at Sundarganj, on the Bamandanga-Sundarganj road around 6am.
Shahadat received two bullet injuries on the left leg and one on his right leg when Liton, who was allegedly drunk, opened fire.
On October 3, Saju Mia, father of the victim, filed a case with Sundarganj Police Station against Liton. Since then, Liton has been on the run.
After the shootout, Liton’s family surrendered two of his firearms to the police. The authorities later cancelled the permits for those firearms.
Since the filing of the case, Liton and his family members have also been away from their house.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Kamal has said that the fugitive MP will be tracked and arrested if he does not surrender before the court immediately.
Liton is now also accused of looting and vandalism in another case.
Hafizar Rahman, a resident of Shahabaz village in Sundarganj upazila, filed the case against Liton and nine others on October 7.
