All over the world palliative care day is observed every year on the 2nd Saturday of October. This year the 2nd Saturday of October, falls on October 10th, 2015. Theme of this years palliative care day is neglected life, neglected patients.
Palliative care is a model of cure that focuses on relieving sufferings of patients with life threatening disease and improve the quality of life(QoL) of patients and the affected families.
It include critically important component of pain management, is holistic in nature, i.e.taking into consideration of the psycho-social and spiritual aspect of the
sufferings along with physical issues.
The care pathway follows throughout the course of an incurable life threatening disease from the very begining of diagnosis of each illness. It gives particular emphasis to end of life care also incorporate bereavement support for the families.
The Centre for Palliative Care, BSMMU arranged observance of palliative care day at the Milon Hall of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University which was inaugurated by acting VC and moderated by Prof Dr Nizamuddin Ahmed, Chair, Palliative Medicine, BSMMU.
Palliative care, as defined by WHO, is an approach that improves the quality of life of the patients and their families facing the problems aassociated with life threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeceable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems physical, psychological and spiritual.
