Meena Bazaar fined Tk 100,000 for displaying tobacco product ad materials

A team of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) in a drive yesterday fined superstore Meena Bazaar in Mohammedpur Mohammadia Housing society area of the capital Tk100,000 for displaying tobacco products advertisement in violation of law, according to a statement issued by Dhaka Ahsania Mission, an NGO. DNCC, Zone-5 (Deputy Secretary) and Executive Magistrate Mir Nahid Ahsan led the drive, which found the superstore’s branch was displaying advertisement materials of Benson & Hedges brand cigarettes of British American Tobacco Bangladesh. The advertisement materials were destroyed as well. The executive magistrate also warned the authorities concerned to abide by tobacco law properly. Dhaka Ahsania Mission Project Officer Audut Rahman Imon was present during the drive, the statement added.

Hearing on charge framing March 31

A court on Monday deferred the hearing of charge framing to March 31 in a case over the killing of eight people in an arson attack on a bus in 2015. Two cases were filed against BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia in this connection. Cumilla District and Sessions Judges Court Judge Ali Akbar passed the order responding to an application filed by Khaleda Zia's lawyer seeking time. Earlier on February 4, the court rejected the bail petition of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and fixed February 25 for hearing on charge-framing in the case. On January 16, a court deferred the hearing on charge framing and bail petition of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia in the case. Eight people were killed and at least 20 others injured in a petrol bomb attack on a bus at Jogmohanpur in Chouddagram upazila in Cumilla on February 3, 2015 during the BNP-led alliance's movement.
UP member stabbed dead in Chattogram

A union parishad member, who sustained stab injuries in a knife attack by his rivals at Ichhapur Bazar in Hathazari upazila on Monday, succumbed to his injuries at Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) yesterday. The deceased was identified as Emran Chowdhury, 45, member of ward no 9 of Gorduara union. Local people said Emran locked into an altercation with one Jamsed at the bazar around 2 pm over previous enmity. At one stage, Jamsed took a knife from a nearby shop and stabbed Emran indiscreetly, leaving him critically injured. Later, the injured was admitted to CMCH where he succumbed to his injuries around 2am, said inspector Jahirul Islam, in-charge of the CMCH police outpost.
Woman crushed under train in Rajshahi

An elderly woman was crushed under train in Mahishbathan Uttarpara rail crossing in the city yesterday morning. The deceased was identified as Selina Begum, 55, a resident of Harpur area in Poba upazila. Sayed Iqbal, officer-in-charge of Government Railway Police Station under Rajshahi Railway West Zone, said that the accident took place around 10:30am when the 'Chapainawabganj-bound' Commuter train hit the woman, leaving her dead on the spot.
