A group of Jahangirnagar University (JU) teachers demanded declaration of the schedule of dean elections as the tenure of deans of six faculties have expired. The teachers under the banner of ‘Sammilita Shikkhak Samaj’ staged a sit-in in front of the VC’s office and sought the tentative dates for holding the election.
However, they withdrew their demonstration after getting assurance from JU Vice Chancellor Professor Farzana Islam that the authorities take steps in this regard.
“VC Prof Farzana Islam assured us of holding all sorts of elections by May 6,” Professor Jamal Uddin, member secretary of the teachers' alliance, told journalists at a press conference on the campus yesterday.
Echoing the same, Jahangirnagar University Teachers’ Association (JUTA) President Prof Ajit Kumar Majumder said, “If she wants to organise all sorts of election by May 6, she will have to declare the schedule of the polls within March 22.”
Mentioning that there is no teacher representative in syndicate right now JUTA Secretary Professor Sohel Rana urged a postponement of new teachers recruitment prior to the dean election. The last dean election was held on May 10, 2016.
