How much longer do we have to learn from tragedies?
Sir,
With a heavy heart, I'm writing this letter. Actually the anguish that I feel can't be described in words. I'm really distraught to learn the horrific tale of people being killed at the Chawkbazar. The inferno lasting more than eight hours claimed dozens of lives.
Similar horrific incidents take place in our country on a regular basis but the question is how much are we being able to take lesson from such incidents? One of the most shocking aspects of the Dhaka fire that swept through several tenement blocks was how inured Bangladeshis have become to the frequency of such incidents.
Much was promised after the Nimtoli fire, the collapse of the Rana Plaza building in 2013, killing hundreds of garment workers, and the 2012 Tazreen Fashions factory fire in Dhaka, claiming the lives of 113 workers making clothes for western brands like Walmart, who were unable to escape because exits were blocked. Yet too little has changed.
Devastating blazes are still a common occurrence in Bangladesh where fire safety record often falls short of even the most basic requirements.
So I would like to draw attention to the relevant authorities concerned through this letter that the only assurance is not solution and its implementation of actions would bring meaningful solution.
And they should thoroughly investigate and bring to justice those who were involved in the tragedy.
