The much-awaited Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayoral by-election will be held tomorrow (Thursday). All mayoral hopefuls have already finished their campaigns to woo voters yesterday. A total of five mayoral hopefuls, including Awami League (AL)-nominated candidate Atiqul Islam, will contest the DNCC mayoral poll. The four other mayoral hopefuls are Jatiya Party’s (JaPa) Shafin Ahmed, National People's Party’s (NPP) Anisur Rahman Dewan, People's Democratic Party’s (PDP) Shahin Khan, and independent candidate Abdur Rahim.
The mayoral post fell vacant after the death of Annisul Huq on November 30, 2017. Atiqul Islam, a former president of the Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers' and Exporters' Association (BGMEA), yesterday campaigned in the Tongi area and some other parts under the DNCC. He promised to make Dhaka a smart city, if elected.
“Dhaka will be for all. If elected, I want to make Dhaka liveable for people from all walks of life,” he said. The BNP has decided to boycott the DNCC by-polls this year. Many citizens predict that Atiqul Islam would become the mayor in the absence of any heavyweight rivals.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission (EC) has imposed a ban on the movement of motorbikes in the election areas. The restriction will come into force from Tuesday midnight to March 1 midnight. This has been confirmed by a letter signed by EC deputy secretary Atiur Rahman.
It said along with the DNCC, the restriction will also come
into effect at the Amtoli Municipality of Barguna district and Kaliganj Municipality of Jhenaidha district, where by-polls to mayoral posts of the two municipalities will also be held at the same time.
The by-polls to DNCC and two municipalities will be held on February 28.
Besides, the EC also imposed restrictions on the movement of auto rickshaws, easy bikes, microbuses, pickups, cars, buses, trucks and other vehicles in DNCC areas from February 27 midnight to February 28 midnight. The day has been declared a public holiday in all government and semi-government, autonomous and private organisations located in DNCC and DSCC areas to help voters cast their votes.
The election for councillor posts in 36 new wards—18 each in DNCC and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC)—will be held on the same day.
In terms of population, the DNCC is the country’s largest city corporation with 23.45 lakh voters.
