The chairman of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, said yesterday (Tuesday) that they are ready to stop chemical imports by business enterprises located in old Dhaka, if the government gives the nod. “Businessmen will shift their enterprises from old Dhaka if the banks stop the letter of credit (LoC) and the NBR does not permit the import of chemicals in their names,” he added. He said this while addressing a ceremony at the NBR office in the capital. It was held to give away awards to organisations that collected the highest amount of value added tax (VAT) at the recently concluded Dhaka International Trade Fair.
The BNR chairman said while he was the secretary of the industries ministry, a decision was taken to relocate chemical warehouses from old Dhaka to a chemical village in Munshiganj. He also said the process of creating plots for the chemical village is going on at the initiative of the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC).
The devastating fire at Chawkbazar has raised the demand for quick relocation of chemical warehouses and godowns from the old part of the capital to avert such incidents in future. The government and other agencies have become vocal for shifting the chemical warehouses from the congested residential areas immediately.
