plane hijack attempt

IO wants black box as evidence in case

STAFF REPORTER, Ctg

The investigation officer (IO) yesterday (Tuesday) seized the Bangladesh Biman Airlines BG-147 plane and wanted the black box as evidence of a case, lodged on Monday with Patenga police station in Chattogram by the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), in connection with the attempt to hijack the plane on Sunday.

Earlier yesterday, the case was transferred to the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit (CTT) in Chattogram and CTT inspector Rajesh Barua has been appointed as Investigation Officer (IO) of the case. In the case complaint, the plaintiff mentioned that the plane from Dhaka reached Chattogram within 28 minutes of take-off. The plaintiff of the case also mentioned that the pilot informed the Air Traffic Control that after 15 minutes of taking off, the suspect, with bomb and arms like objects, tried to hijack the plane.

As the conversation is recorded in the ECR receiver of the Air Traffic Control and the black box of the plane, these would be important evidence for the investigation, said Rajesh Barua.

For investigation, the surveillance video record inside the plane would be more important evidence.   “We have found blood stain in the plane, but no sign of bullet,” added Barua. He said: “We are focusing on everything. We want all the evidence of the case,” he said. However, till filing of the report at 7pm, he did not get any evidence of the case. An Army commando operation thwarted an attempt to hijack a Dubai-bound Biman Bangladesh Airlines plane from Dhaka after it landed at Chattogram’s Shah Amanat International Airport on Sunday evening. The suspected hijacker, Mohammad Palash Ahmed, 28, son of Pear Zahan and Renu Begum, hailed from Dudhghata village of Sonargaon upazila in Narayanganj district. He was killed in the commando operation.

Devrata Sarker, technology assistant of Shah Amanat International Airport, filed a case with Patenga police station on Monday night, accusing Polash and his unknown cohorts. The case was transferred to the CCT and inspector Rajesh Barua was appointed IO. Questions have been raised whether the pistol that the suspect carried was real or a toy.

Chattogram Area Commander and Army 24th Infantry Division GOC, Major General SM Matiur Rahman, while briefing the media after the operation at around 8:45pm on Sunday, said: “The suspected hijacker was carrying a pistol.”  However, Chattogram Metropolitan Police commissioner Mahbubur Rahman said it was a toy pistol. But two days after the incident, the police did not get any evidence from RAB, the CAAB or the Army. On the other hand, in the case complaint the plaintiff did not mention the recovery of a pistol. He said Palash tried to hijack the plane by showing a bomb-like object and arms. He again said when the suspect tried to enter the cockpit, the crew saw a bomb-like object and an arms-like object. The complaint also said Palash blasted two fireworks-like object at that time. However, this was mentioned in the briefing of the Army after the commando operation.
