Shinepukur first team to reach semis

Shinepukur Cricket Club ensured their semifinal berths as the first team when they edged Mohammedan Sporting Club by 22 runs in the second and last Group-C match of the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) Twenty20 Cricket League at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur yesterday.

By thrashing Legends of Rupganj by five wickets, the winners- who are comparatively less experienced at premier league as they had promoted to the top-tier in 2017 but got opportunity to play DPL first in 2018 when they finished ninth-floated their winning flag in this tournament.

Shinepukur captain Afif Hossain Dhrubo opted to bat first after winning the foil on Mirpur’s unpredicted wicket, where they fumbled in the very second and third over as they mislaied Suhrawardi Shuvo and Sabbir Hossain cheaply while they were at 19 for two.

Together with Towhid Hridoy, Afif Hossain tackled the initial batting debacle and put together 42 for the third-wicket before his exit. The young captain lashed 25 off 21 with three boundaries.

Hridoy then attempted to broaden the total by building up big partnership with Mohammad Rakib and Shuvagata Hom.

He forged a couple of successful  partnerships including a solid 48 fourth-wicket with Mohammad Rakib, who smashed 22 off 27 with a maximum and as many boundary and an outstanding 83 with Shuvagata Hom for the unbeaten fifth-wicket stand that set a staggering 192 for Mohammedan Sporting Club en route to his top-score 66.

At premier stage, it was first for Towhid Hridoy, who is still playing at Bangladesh Under-19 Cricket team, blasted four sixes and as many fours in his unbeaten 41-ball knock.

Shuvagata Hom continued his imperious runs of form as he played another quick-fire innings of 18-ball 58 after his opening match scintillation. He slammed the fastest fifty from just 16 balls that smashed the erstwhile record of Mominul Haque, who made the fastest fifty from 19 balls for Bangladesh ‘A’ Team against Bangladesh team in the Bangladesh T20 Challenge Series in 2012-2013.

His classy 58 off 18 that was laden with half-a-dozen sixes and four boundaries and later adjudged him the player-of-the-match for the second consecutive time.

Mohammedan used fast bowlers Alauddin Babu, Qazi Anik and spinners Sohag Gazi, Saqlain Sojib and Nihaduzzaman. Barring Gazi, the quartet picked up a wicket each for the Motijheel-outfit.

Chasing the stiff target, Mohammedan Sporting Club made a good start through their opening stand of Abdul Mazid and Avishek Mitra, who fell first after scoring 19.

Mazid (33) paired with Mohammad Ashraful (21) and captain Rakibul Hasan (16) to continue the momentum but Mohammedan sustained a mini-collapse at this stage as they lost four wickets in the space of just 16 runs. It was started with the fall of Mazid and Ashraful, who fell to two consecutive balls when they had the same score of 74 and then Nadif Chowdhury and Sohag Gazi were removed.

Since then, Irfan Sukkur strived with the fellow batsmen but he did not get ably support from them except Alauddin Babu (13). This wicketkeeper-batsman pulled together 47 with Babu for the seventh-wicket.

Sukkur finally clouted an unbeaten 50 off 29 balls that helped Mohammedan put on 170 for nine in their allocation 20 overs. Mohammedan’s hopes to progress to semifinals stopped with the loss.

Suhrawardi Shuvo, Hamidul Islam  and Sujon Hawlader snapped up two wickets each for the winning side.

Fatullah Stadium

Gazi Group Cricketers changed the equation of the Group-D when they thrashed spirited Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan (BKSP) by 27 runs in the rain-affected Group-D tie of the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) Twenty20 Cricket League at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium in Fatullah yesterday.

BKSP generated the surprise after drubbing Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club by two runs in Super Over Eliminator. Now, the third and last match of the Group between Gazi and Doleshwar has been emerged ‘key’, the fixture will be held at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium today.

The winners of the match will progress to the semifinals, where Shinepukur Cricket Club sealed their spot in the four-team semifinal phase, which will begin on March 1.

The match delayed to start due to the countrywide rain. As a result, each team got opportunity to play only 10-over match.

Put in to bat, Gazi Group Cricketers garnered a comprehensive 123 for four in their stipulated 10 overs courtesy of Rony Talukder’s cameo 16-ball 41. Wicketkeeper-batsman Waliul Karim (25), Sajjadul Haque (20), Mysukur Rahman (not out 19) and Touhid Tareq (11 not out) were the other contributors to the Gazi.

Left-arm spinner Naushad Iqbal was the pick who claimed three wickets for 20 in his two-over spell.

Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan (BKSP) in reply made a shocking start as they lost three top-order batsmen of Fahad Ahmed, Ratul Khan and Shamim Hossain Patwari inside three overs while they were stuttering at seven for three.

Aminul Islam in association with wicketkeeper-batsman Akbar Ali shared 79 for the fourth-wicket stand but that was not enough to avert their defeat. Before breaking the partnership, Akbar Ali, who came to play his premier stage game after playing for Bangladesh Under-19 Cricket Team, top-scored for BKSP with 43. He clobbered four sixes and two fours in his 20-ball 43.

Aminul made an unbeaten 34 off 24 with three boundaries and one six. Kaiyum was at stumps on nine.

Fast bowler Abu Haider Rony took two wickets for the winnings side. Opener Rony Talukder was named for the player of the match award for his rapid-fire batting display.

However, Uttara Sporting Club registered a runaway six-wicket victory over Khelaghar Samaj Kallayan Samity by DLS method in another match of the Group-B of the newly-inducted T20 Cricket Tournament at the same venue in Fatullah yesterday evening.

This match was also shortened to 17-over-a side owing to the rains.

Opted to bat, Khelaghar Samaj Kallayan Samity mustered 109 for seven thanks to Rafsan Al Mahmud’s top-score 28, after which Uttara Sporting Club overhauled the target with six wickets in  hand and seven balls to be left unplayed.
