Train kills youth in Gazipur
An unidentified youth was killed when a train hit him on Dhaka-Mymensingh rail route in Gazipur sadar upazila yesterday. The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately, but he is around 20 years old.
The accident took place when a train hit him in Bhaoal Gazipur area, leaving him dead on the spot, police sources said. Later, being informed, police rushed to the spot, recovered the body, at 7:30 am and sent to Dhaka Medical college Hospital morgue for autopsy, the sources added.
3500 yaba tablets seized; 4 held
Detective Branch (DB) of police in different drives on Saturday seized 3,500 yaba tablets and six litters of phensidyl and detained four drug paddlers in this connection. The arrestees were Md Parvej, Ahsan Habib, Al Amin and Hasan Shikder. The DB officials nabbed the first three from Dakkhin Khan area and seized 2,500 yaba tablets from their possessions. In the primary investigation, they confessed that they sell yaba in different areas of the capital. Another DB team arrested Hasan from Khilgaon area and recovered the 1000 yaba tablets and phensidyl from his possession, a DMP release said.
Man killed in road accident
A man was killed and 15 others were injured in a road accident in Madina Masjid area on Barisal-Dhaka highway of Barisal district yesterday. The deceased was Ohidul Islam, 40. Officer-in-Charge of Gournadi police station Mahabubur Rahman said the accident took place when a truck carrying a body and another 25 people fell into a roadside ditch in the area at about 7 am as its driver lost control over the steering, leaving one dead on the spot and 15 others of the truck injured. The injured were sent to Sher-e-Bangala Medical College Hospital.
BFUJ election November 28
The election to executive council of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) will be held on November 28 across the country. The decision was taken at a meeting of the BFUJ executive committee held at National Press Club here with its president Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul in the chair. It also decided that the BFUJ council session will be held at National Press Club in the capital on November 13. The meeting formed an election commission headed by senior journalist Abu Taher as the chief election commissioner.
It has asked all concerned front organisations across the country to send voters lists and councilors' lists and proposals of constitutional amendments to BFUJ secretary general within October 25.
Secretary general Abdul Jalil Bhuiyan presented organisational report before the meeting. Journalists' leaders of Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna, Moymensingh, Cox's Bazaar, Jessore and Naryanganj took part in the discussion.
91 arrested in Chittagong
Chittagong District Police in overnight dive from Saturday to early Sunday arrested 91 people from different upazilas of the district. In the drive police seized 14 litres of liquor and 100 pieces of contraband yaba tablets. Mohammad Naimul Hasan, additional superintendent of police (Special Branch) of Chittagong district police said “Police in special drives from Saturday night to Sunday morning, arrested 91 people from different parts of the upazilas of the district. Of them, 79 persons are warranted accused in different cases and 12 others are accused in regular cases.
