Investigators in a spot

Investigators who are probing the recent murders of the two foreigners are feeling embarrassed due to the conflicting statements by top officials and political leaders.
Just yesterday, at least two top officials issued two different statements regarding the investigation into the killings of foreigners—one in the capital and another in Rangpur.
Italian citizen Cesare Tavella was killed by three unidentified assailants on September 28 in the capital's Gulshan diplomatic area and Japanese citizen Hoshi Kunio was killed by three other unidentified killers on the morning of October 3 in Rangpur.
The home minister said he was hopeful that the two investigation committees would soon identify the motive and find out the killers. But the inspector general of police (IGP), at another programme yesterday, said investigators would need more time to solve the cases.
Home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, while attending a programme at Gazipur's Shafipur, said the government has prioritised the investigation into the two foreigners’ murders by all law enforcement and detective agencies in the country.
“We are hopeful the cases will be solved soon, and the killers and their motives will be revealed,” he added.
However, IGP AKM Shahidul Islam, at a programme in Savar, said, “Investigators would need more time to solve the cases.” He said the motives and killers would be found after any of the two cases is solved. Before that, it would be difficult to comment on the matter, he added.
About the red alerts issued by several embassies, he said the police did not have anything to say if they have issued the alerts. But the police believe they have taken enough measures—not just for foreigners, but also for the citizens of the country.
When asked about the Islamic State (IS) militants' claim of being responsible for the murders, he said they had not found any basis for the claim. Regarding Rita Kartz, who runs the website concerned, he said the police did not know anything about her and how she had gathered the information about the claim.
“Such statements have made our job difficult and we are in a very embarrassing position” an official who is probing into one of the two murders, told The Independent.
Meanwhile, it has been learned that law enforcement agencies have detained a listed professional killer in connection with the killing of Italian aid worker Cesare Tavella, who was killed by three unidentified assailants on September 28 in the capital’s Gulshan diplomatic area in the city. He was identified as Jewel alias Shooter Jewel, son of Sohrab, a resident of Shimoltula Bazar in city’s Badda area.

In 2001, this gang became into the limelight after killing another criminal, Hiron. After the murder, Jewel got a “rank”.
Law enforcement officials are also hunting down Alamgir and Laizuddin, two other members of the professional gang of killers.
Local sources disclosed that the law enforcement agencies recently detained Shooter Jewel, a listed professional killer of the Gulshan Badda area.
Local sources alleged that the gang had killed different people as contract killers several times.
They have been controlling the underworld of the entire Gulshan Badda area for a long time.
But while talking to The Independent, deputy police commissioner (media and public relations), Muntasirul Islam Rony, said, “I have no information that anyone directly involved in the killing of the Italian aid worker has been detained.”
Deputy police commissioner Mahbub Alam of the Detective Branch (DB) and additional deputy police commissioner, Mahfujul Alam Russel, the two top intelligences directly involved in the investigation, also denied that the DB has detained Shooter Jewel.
They however, hinted, that as several law enforcement agencies are working on the murder, they might arrest him.
Although investigators have not made any progress in the two murder cases, Rangpur police recovered another bullet shell from the spot yesterday afternoon.
The Rangpur superintendent of police (SP) confirmed the matter and said the police cordoned off the place and no one was allowed to move through the scene of the crime.
He declined to say anything further about the bullet.
Again, a three-member Japanese team visited the deputy commissioner (DC) of Rangpur district yesterday afternoon.
DC Rahat Anwar told journalists after the visit that they sought assistance from the district administration towards the investigation and other aspects. He assured the team of all assistance, he added.
The police have so far not arrested anyone or detained any person in connection with the Tavella murder case. Ten persons have been detained in connection with the Hoshi murder case.
Among the 10 detainees, two were later shown arrested and placed on 10-day remand each. One of them, a local BNP leader, Rashedun Khan Nabi Biplob, was sent to jail later.
Police had freed two bankers detained in Rajshahi on Saturday. Yesterday afternoon, they had freed two other persons detained from Pabna and Rangpur districts.
The owner of the house where Hoshi Kunio was a tenant, Golam Jakaria, an auto-rickshaw driver, Munnaf Ali, and an eyewitness, Murad Hossain, are still in police custody. The police did not say when they might be freed or when they would be shown arrested.
Hoshi Kunio’s body was still at the Rangpur Medical College Hospital. However, the Italian embassy was making preparations to receive Tavella’s body and take it to Italy.
