BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday claimed that the country is passing through a transition period and reiterated his call to work together to face the situation.
“We've lost our freedom of expression and right to franchise. Therefore, we call upon the people to work together to realise their fundamental rights,” he said while speaking at a view-exchange meeting with leaders of Jatiyatabadi Muktijoddah Dal, an associate organisaiton of the BNP, at the party headquarters.
BNP spokesperson Dr Asaduzzaman Ripon criticised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her remarks that Khaleda Zia has been hatching conspiracies from abroad. “The allegation is baseless. The nation does not expect such statements from responsible persons,” he added.
Meanwhile, Ripon at a press briefing yesterday termed the Prime Minister’s comments involving BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia with the murders of two foreigners as objectionable. He rejected the allegations raised by the Premier, saying that such statements might obstruct the proper investigation into the killings of two foreigners.
“The investigation process cannot go forward if such comments are made from the highest level of the government. Indeed, the government is trying to shift the focus of the murder cases by making such statements," he observed.
The BNP leader said the real perpetrators would be relieved after hearing the statements of the Premier. “The fabricated and baseless allegations were made only to tarnish the image of the BNP. The statements are objectionable, unwarranted, and beyond political norms and etiquette,” he added.
Chowdhury Kamal Ibne Yususf, Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, Selima Rahman and Khairul Kabor Khokan, among others, were present on the occasion.
