DNCC begins removing illegal billboards

The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has started a drive to remove unauthorised billboards from the city after the October 10 deadline. The corporation is now ready to take action against the owners of such illegal hoardings in the city.
Executive magistrate Md Shamsul Islam of the DNCC told The Independent yesterday that the corporation has already begun removing illegal hoardings in the capital. “We’ve already removed 17 illegal billboards from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport area in Uttara. There were 10 large billboards, five medium and the rest of the structures were small,” he said.
“It’s a good sign that billboard owners are removing their structures on their own. We haven’t imposed any fine yet. However, as per the City Corporations Act, we can take action against the owners or renters of such illegal billboards, if necessary,” he added.
Executive magistrate SM Mahbubur Rahman (deputy secretary and managing director-transport) of the DNCC will conduct a drive to remove illegal billboards from Tejgaon Industrial area today around 10am.
According to DNCC sources, the mobile court will lead the drive at Zone-3, Tajgaon BFDC (Bangladesh Film Department Corporation) West Gate to South of CSD Godown, Ajmeri Hotel adjacent plot 353-356, 357-358 area’s illegal shops and unauthorised structures.
Earlier, DNCC mayor Annisul Huq had asked the owners of illegal billboards or hoardings to remove their unapproved structures by October 10.
A young man died and three others sustained injuries when a billboard collapsed in the capital recently. Huq said that the haphazard setting up of billboards and other advertisement boards are eyesores affecting the beauty of the city. “Hoardings are put up not only along the roads but also on rooftops of roadside buildings, and on both private and government lands.
