Many institutions in Tangail and Laxmipur have no Shaheed Minar over 65 years after the historic language movement.

The language movement is an important event of our national life. Our Liberation War drew inspiration from the Language Movement of 1952. Considering the sacrifices made for the language movement, February 21 has been designated as the International Mother Language Day.

Shaheed Minars symbolise the movement. But 1946 educational institutions under 12 Upazilas of Tangail district are without Shaheed Minars. As a result, the school kids are being deprived of the spirit of historic language movement and the Liberation War.

From sources it is learned that out of 1,629 primary schools under 12 Upazila, 1,516 are without Shaheed Minars. Out of a total of 173 in Ghatail, only 5; out of 150 in Sakhipur, only 6; out of 161 in Goplapur, only 7; out of 79 in Basail, only 3; out of 164 in Sadar, only 13, out of 100 in Delduwar, only 5; out of 179 in Mirzapur, only 7; out of 172 in Kalihati, only 26, out of 110 in Madhupur, only 10, out of 156 in Nagorpur, only 7, out of 110 in Bhuapur, only 2; out of 85 in Dhanbari, only 22 schools have established Shaheed Minars.

Out of 805 Colleges, schools and Madrashas under 12 Upazilas of the district, 430 educational institutions have established Shaheed Minars. Out 74 in Sadar, 10; out of 40 in Basail, 10; out of 83 in Kalihati, 27; out of 55 in Sakhipur; 31; out of 49 in Ghatail, 25; out of 70 in Goplapur, 40; out of 56 in Dhanbari, 25; out of 92 in Madhupur, 38; out of 79 in Mirzapur, 49; out of 106 in Delduwar, 50, out of 27 in Nagorpur 27, out of 60 in Bhuaour, 38 educational institutions have established Shaheed Minars.

It is alleged that teachers, SMC members and students have no interest in observing national days like the International Mother Language Day, Victory Day and Independence Day. Like other holidays, most teachers and students pass such days idling.

Teachers and the students numbering about 5 lakh are being deprived of the spirit and the significance of these important days.

When asked, some students said that they were not aware of the Shaheed Minar, Victory Day and Independence Day. They did not go to the Shaheed Minar to pay homage to the martyrs.

Headmaster of Hamidpur Govt. Primary School Md. Abul Hashem Mia said that they had a great interest in Shaheed Minars but could not build one as they got no money and instruction from the government.

District Education Officer Laila Khanom said that Shaheed Minars should be built as kids learnt the language in the school. But there was no budget for the construction of a Shaheed Minar. It should be built from the grants of the affluent. She is hopeful since there are 12 Shaheed Minars in 12 Madrashahs under 6 Upazilas of the district.

Bulbul Khan Mahbub, a language hero and a veteran FF, said that it was shameful that a large number of educational institutions were without Shaheed Minars.

Language hero Dr. Mirza Mazharul Islam, a recipient of the Ekushey Padok, said that Tangail had a rich history of its role in the language movement and the Liberation War. It was shameful that a large number of educational institutions were without Shaheed Minars. “Our patriotism and spirit of Bangalee nationalism is questionable. Establishing Shaheed Minars should be made mandatory,” he said.

DC of Tangail Md. Shahidul Islam said that he was not aware that a large number of educational institutions did not have Shaheed Minars. He added that he would ask the institutions to establish Shaheed Minar. “We will inspire the authority of the institutions to establish Shaheed Minars and give monetary help.” He urged the affluent to help in the effort.

The picture in Laxmipur is not different.

Nearly 1,150 schools in Laxmipur district have no Shaheed Minar, depriving students of the opportunity to pay their tributes to the country’s language movement heroes.

According to Laxmipur District Education office source said, 731 primary schools, 178 higher secondary schools, 133 vocational institutions, and 28 colleges do not have their own Ahajid Minar, in the upazila, although Amar Ekusy is observed across the country by arranging different programmes at the Shaheed Minars.

As a result, students of those institutions are being deprived of paying their respects to the martyrs of February 21, as Shaheed Minars have not been built there even after 65 years of the language movement.

Kamal Hossian , student of a local high school, said, “Every year we recall our language heroes but have not built any Shaheed Minar,” he said.

A Government primary school teacher Imam Uddin said, “Students in 90 per cent of the educational institutions cannot arrange programmes in memory of the glorious history of the Language movement.”

The local administration, the local elite, and political leaders should come forward to build Shaheed Minars in the educational institutions in order to highlight the importance of the International Mother Language Day to grass-roots people.

Students of some schools go to faraway Shaheed Minars in other educational institutions to pay respect to the language movement. Mahafujur Rahman Bhiyan, district primary education officer, told The Independent that students make Shaheed Minars bamboo stick where there are no permanent structures.

In 1972, two schools, Pierpur Shahid Majahar Monir High School and Uttar Pierpur Government Primary School were built but have not built any Shaheed Minar.

Local people said, when Ekushey February knock on the door, newsmen come to the school, publish their story, but nothing changes. The local elite urged the government to direct the the school authority to build a Shaheed Minar.
