A Dhaka court yesterday sent Helal Uddin, former officer-in-charge (OC) of Khilgaon Police Station, to jail in a case filed against him for torturing former Dhaka University student Abdul Kadar, now a lecturer at a government college. Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Alamgir Kabir Raj passed the order after rejecting the bail plea of Helal on his surrender before the court. On May 17, a Dhaka court sentenced Helal in absentia to three years in jail and fined him Tk 10,000 for torturing and implicating Kadar in three false cases. On July 16 in 2011, then Khilgaon OC Helal detained Kadar on his way to Fazlul Haque Hall at Dhaka University. Later, the OC severely tortured Kadar and forced him to give a confessional statement in a false case. Helal even stabbed Kadar on his leg with a sharp weapon and later implicated him in two other cases. Following media reports, Kadar was freed on bail 18 days after his detention. On Jan 23 in 2012, following a HC order, Kadar filed a case against OC Helal. The charge sheet was submitted on Mar 26 the same year. In 2012, Helal and then SI Alam Badshah and ASI Shahidur Rahman were suspended for the troture.
