Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) governing council has decided to hold the seventh edition of the blockbuster Twenty20 tournament of the BPL in the regular slot of October-December in calendar year, fixed by International Cricket Council (ICC) for the BPL. A new venue will be added to the existing fleet of venues at this regular edition of the cash-rich T20 tournament. It is Khulna who will be the new host venue after Dhaka, Chattogram and Sylhet.
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) director and BPL governing council chairman Sheikh Sohel made the revelation to The Independent yesterday.
“The seventh edition of the BPL will begin in this year, which will be held at our fixed slot of October-November or November-December what normally has been coming to hold,” said Sheikh Sohel, who is also chairman of the BCB disciplinary committee.
“What has been finished few days back was the edition of 2018. One-two months had been deferred for the eleventh national parliamentary election. That’s a national interest. But the national election will not be held every year. So, the seventh BPL will be held in the fixed slot of the 2019 season,” Sohel told The Independent over mobile phone.
The news of two BPL in a calendar year had been circulated before the sixth edition of the T20 tournament. But the franchisees delivered a mixed-bag reaction about it at that moment. Considering the additional business and expenditure in a year, they did their reaction in the board. Despite having reluctance among the franchises, BPL governing council assured that there will be no effect on it to hold the regular edition of 2019.
“As we organized BPL-6 in January, 2019 what was the edition of the 2018 season, the regular edition of the 2019 season will be held as per the ICC’s slot-October-November or November-December,” Sohel said.
“We have to keep in mind that is there any tournament at that time or is the availability of the overseas’ players enough for the BPL. In that consideration, the slot of October-November or November-December is the best for BPL,” he also said.
“We will soon talk with the franchises. I think there will be no problem for a month if it goes to and fro,” he added.
Along with that, the council has also decided to increase the venue of the BPL-7. For this, Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium in Khulna is being refurbished so that the stadium could host a string of BPL matches there.
“No international match is held in Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium in Khulna so long. We’ve some works to do in the stadium. If we could finish those at the specific timeframe, we of course organise BPL matches in Khulna,” he said.
