Diseases of ear, nose and throat are jointly considered as a group of medical conditions by health professionals, as these organs are contiguous in anatomical placement in the body and their disorders sometimes overlap between the organs. For example an infection in the nose can spread to the throat and onward to the auditory canal. These diseases affect the young and old, rich and poor, irrespective of race and ethnicity. Some of these diseases, such as colds, flu and allergies affecting the nose and throat are simple enough conditions to be treated at home under doctor’s advice and even with alternative medicinal prophylaxis.       

Others need hospitalisation at the onset of the disease. Most ENT diseases are not age-specific except for tumours and cancers of these organs. Because these diseases are widespread globally and attack persons of every strata of the society, we decided that this week’s cover story should be on Ear, Nose and Throat ailments. This is also because there is more information and medical knowledge available about these diseases than many other similarly-grouped diseases. As is commonly knows there are hundreds of diseases present in the world but there are known cures for only twenty-six. Among the absolutely curable diseases several are ENT related.

In the recent years there has been rapid advancement in the treatment of ENT diseases in this country. There are highly trained professionals who have done successful operations. Most drugs are relatively cheap and widely available. State of the art equipment are also being used in specialised ENT hospitals.
