Six CU students suspended

UNB, Chattogram

Chittagong University (CU) authorities on Thursday suspended six students on allegations of smoking cannabis in a campus dorm. CU Vice-chancellor Prof Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury exercised his authority to this effect on Thursday afternoon, acting on the recommendation of the Board of Residence Health and Disciplinary Committee of the university, confirmed assistant proctor of the university Niaz Morshed Ripan. A proctorial body team caught the six students red-handed, or maybe more appropriately in this case red-eyed and green-handed, while they were smoking up at Alaol Hall on Wednesday night. The detainees were handed over to the Hathazari Police Station, the assistant proctor said.

Two die in Turag boat capsize

UNB, Savar

A madrasah student and an unidentified man died as a boat capsized in the Turag River here on Thursday afternoon. The madrasah student was identified as Towhidur Rahman, 11. Atiqur Rahman Khan Shanta, chairman of Kaundia union parishad, said the boat carrying several passengers sank in the middle of the river around 2pm after being hit by a trawler. The duo went missing in the incident while other passengers managed to swim ashore. On information, a team of divers from Mirpur Fire Service rushed in and retrieved the bodies after two hours. Later, locals seized the trawler and caught its trawler master and three other workers.

13 shops gutted in Ctg

UNB, Chattogram

Thirteen shops were gutted in a fire which broke out at College Bazar Road in Mirsarai upazila early Friday. Jashimuddin, Assistant director of Chattogram Fire Service and Civil Defence, said the fire originated from electric short circuit at a shop of a kitchen market around 12:15 am and spread soon. On information, a firefighting unit went to the spot and extinguished the blaze after three hours of frantic efforts around 4:30 am. The affected shop owners said that the extent of loss caused by the fire could go up to Tk 15 lakh.
