Massive drive to clean Barishal sewer

Staff Reporter, Barishal

Barishal City Corporation (BCC) started massive drive to remove garbage dumped in drains of the city. The BCC sources said that a total of 58 square kilometer areas of the corporation has total 376 kilometers of drainage system including 212 kilometers pucca (concrete) and 164 kilometers kacha( muddy) drains.

It already had removed garbage and wastage from 22km pucca drains. The operation has been started last week and would be continued till next few weeks, said Khairul Hasan, chief executive officer (CEO) of the BCC.

Most of the drains of BCC have turned into garbage dumping dustbins and blocked proper sewerage and drainage systems making threats to water logging and flash-floods in the city during rainy season. So BCC started the drain cleaning drive to make the city healthy and free the sewerage system from water logging, he added.

Water logging becomes a common problem of the city during rainy season due to inappropriate sub-standard drainage construction, unplanned waste disposal and irregular cleaning and improper waste management. So about 5 lakh city dwellers are facing environmental degradation, mosquito menace and health risks due to blockages and lack of smooth flows in the drainage system, said Manabendra Batabayel, a senior citizen of the city.

Dr Rabiul Islam, in charge of conservancy section of BCC,  said daily at least hundred of labours are engaged in this massive operation and already drains of Sadar Road, Hospital Road, Bazaar Road, Bogura Road areas have been freed from dumped garbage, silt  and mud.

BCC failed to clean wastes, garbage from concrete drainage in last 10 years and as a result it becomes silted day by day, said Enayet Hossain Chowdhury, a freedom fighter of Barishal After visiting the drainage sweeping operations in different areas of the city, it was found that most of the drains were full of waste and garbage like plastic, bottles, rags and other items.

Hosneaara Begum, 60 said, I did not seen any worker of BCC fully cleaning the drain in the last several years.

During rainy season, often the dirty water overflows on the roads from the drains creating most unhygienic environment and troubles for the city dwellers and commuters, said Das Gupta Ashish Kumar, one leader of the teachers association of Barishal.

Dr. Monwar Hossain, Civil Surgeon of Barishal  said  if dirty water marooned in  city areas then  it may cause of waterborne diseases like malaria, gastroenteritis, and jaundice and other related diseases.

Shah Sazeda , president Banagladesh Paribesh Andolon Barishal district unit, said we demanded this type of cleaning operation of the city drains would be continued for round the year.
