The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) will disclose soon the findings of the research on radiation emitted by mobile phone towers, handsets and Wi-Fi networks, said BTRC chairman Md Jahirul Haque. The telecom regulator initiated the move to find out whether such radiation poses any health risk to people or has any adverse impact on the environment.
When asked about the findings, the BTRC chairman said it was not possible to disclose the results right now, but they would be released soon.
He also said the commission was working to protect people from health risks posed by such radiation. Early on, the BTRC procured tools to measure radiation following a High Court (HC) directive asking the telecom regulator to take preventive measures in case of any harmful radiation from mobile towers. The commission, then, stared measuring radiation from mobile phone towers in Dhaka and Chattogram.
In 2012, the Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh had filed a petition before the HC in 2012 over the radiation level of towers. In March last year, the High Court (HC) directed the BTRC to take preventive measures, if necessary.
On March 28, 2017, the HC also directed the government to obtain expert opinions from three international organisations—the World Health Organisation (WHO), International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP)—regarding the public health risk caused by radiation from mobile phone towers.
Last year, the BTRC said it had made preparations to find out by September the risks to public health posed by radiation emitted by mobile phone towers. In December, it called an international tender to purchase radiation measurement equipment to assess public health risks.
Eventually, it awarded the tender to an Indian company to purchase tools to assess such risks in May this year.
Fastech Telecommunication (India) Pvt Ltd supplied the equipment, including two monitoring vehicles, worth about Tk. 2.90 crore.
Following another HC order, the health ministry formed an experts committee that studied some Dhaka towers and found the radiation to be harmful to public health.
According to the minutes of the 204th meeting of the commission, tools used in the telecommunications sector, especially in mobile phone towers, can create electromagnetic fields. It is important to investigate whether these frequencies adversely affect humans and the environment.
