Work together to cope with adverse impacts

BSS, Dhaka
Work together to cope with adverse impacts

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin yesterday urged all to work together to cope with the adverse impacts of global climate change.

“If we perform our duties properly, we will be able to address the damages and losses caused by global climate change,” he said while addressing a report launching ceremony at Cirdap auditorium in the capital. The minister unveiled the ‘Roadmap and Action Plan for Implementing Bangladesh NDC: Transport, Power and Industry Sectors’ report on the occasion.

Speaking as the chief guest, Shahab Uddin said Awami League in its election manifesto ahead of the 2018 general elections had given the highest importance on the environment and climate, and that is why his ministry is working sincerely to achieve the goals, following the election manifesto. He said since 2009, the government has given allocation of Taka 3,500 crore aiming to protect the country’s environment and forests and deal with the adverse impacts of climate change.

Terming climate change a global problem, the minister said people across the globe have already realised that climate change is a growing problem to all.

“The United State experiences a record low temperature – minus 45 degree Celsius – this year. Flood took place in the Saudi Arabia even in the winter while wildfire is brought out in Australia,” he added.

About Bangladesh’s contribution to global warming, Shahab Uddin said the country contributes a very little to Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission, but it is being affected severely due to the adverse consequences of global warming.

He hoped that using the domestic resources, Bangladesh would be able to cut GHG emission by 5 per cent in power, transport and industries sectors by 2030 as per its commitments given in the Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDC).

Chaired by Environment, Forest and Climate Change secretary Abdullah Al Mohsin Chowdhury, the function was addressed, among others, by additional secretary of Road, Transport and Highway Division Abdul Malik, joint secretary of the Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry Mohammad Ala Uddin and joint secretary of the Industries Ministry Yasmin Sultana.
