Make city polls as fair as Dec 30 election: CEC

Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda yesterday urged the election officials to ensure that the upcoming polls to the Dhaka City Corporations are held as fair as the December 30 national polls. The CEC made the comment while briefing the returning officers and executive magistrates of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) over the Dhaka city elections at the commission's Agargaon office in the capital.

By-polls to DNCC mayoral post will be held on February 28. Election to councillor posts in the 36 new wards -- 18 under the DNCC and 18 under the Dhaka South City Corporation — will also be held on the same day. KM Nurul Huda said, “The 11th general election was held in a fair manner. We want the Dhaka city corporation elections to be held in a fair manner like that of the national election.” He also urged the election officials to employ the same proficiency and hard work as shown in the Dec 30 elections.

“It is not your duty to see who wins the election. Your job is to monitor whether the candidates are maintaining the (election) code of conduct,” he told the election officials. The chief election commissioner said due to intense competition, councilor candidates sometimes violates the laws. The candidates are bound to listen to the magistrates if they exercise their judicial power, he added.
