A Bangladeshi national was gunned down by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) on Fatepur frontier in Shibganj upazila of the district on Wednesday night. The deceased has been identified as Anwar Hossain, 25, of Gaipara in Shibganj upazila of the district. Acting commanding officer of BGB battalion-9 Major Nazmul Alam said the BSF admitted at a flag meeting that its soldiers at Thakurbari camp shot Anwar Hossain dead about two kilometres inside Indian territory on Wednesday at around 10 pm. BSF agreed to return the body after autopsy, but no timeframe was given, he added. Meanwhile, at least five villagers were injured when some members of Indian Border Security Force trespassed into Bangladesh territory and opened fire at Chouratari village along Durgapur border under Aditmari upazila of Lalmonirhat yesterday.
According to local people and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) sources, five-six members of the BSF 21 battalion entered into the Bangladesh territory near pillar-924 chasing some cattle traders from Bangladesh. Recognising them as BSF personnel, villagers surrounded them, forcing the armed personnel to fire rubber bullets around 7:30pm.
Contacted, commanding officer of BGB 15 battalion Lt Colonel Bazlur Rahman Hayati said they have protested the incident and asked the BSF for a flag meeting.
BGB Director General Maj Gen Aziz Ahmed said he has talked to the BSF authorities and protested the incitement. He also said that a flag meeting will be held along the border over the incident today.
