Family members to meet Mujahid today
Family members of death-row convict and Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General, Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid, will meet him in Dhaka Central Jail today.
Advocate Shishir Manir, one of Mujahids counsel, told reporters that five members of his family led by youngest son Ali Ahmed Mabrur will meet him in prison at 11:00am on Friday.
We are now preparing the review petition, which will be filed before the apex court by October 15, said Shishir.
If it occurs, this will be the first meeting between Mujahid and his family members after the Supreme Court on September 30 published full copy of the verdict that upheld his death penalty for wartime offences.
The International Crimes Tribunal-2, on July 17, 2013, had sentenced Mujahid to death after finding him guilty of five war crimes including complicity in killing intellectuals towards the fag end of the Liberation War.
Senior Jail Super of Dhaka Central Jail Jahangir Kabir however told The Independent that they will follow protocol if Mujahids family members want to meet him.
Prison rules warrant submission of an application after coming to the jail gate for family members who want to meet jail inmates. Prison authorities allow family members to meet their kith and kin after completion of necessary formalities, said Jahangir.
Five lawyers led by Shishir had met Mujahid on October 3 to consult about filing of a review petition. Mujahid had advised them to file a petition seeking review of the Appellate Divisions verdict upholding his death sentence.
On June 16, the apex court had pronounced a brief verdict upholding Mujahids death sentence. After publishing full copy of the verdict, the International Crimes Tribunal on October 1 had issued warrant for execution of death penalty against Mujahid.
