Information minister Hasanul Haq Inu yesterday held the BNP-Jamaat alliance responsible for the killings of foreigners in the country, saying that at this juncture, there were no political parties except the BNP and Jamaat that could be involved in such a conspiracy.
“I suspect that the BNP and its ally, Jamaat-e-Islami, might have a hand behind the killings of two foreigners in Bangladesh. They have organised dangerous terrorist activities in the near past. They are yet to deny crimes such as sabotage,” the information minister told reporters at the Secretariat, after a meeting with a delegation from GrameenPhone.
Describing how militancy spread during the BNP’s regime, Inu said, “Nizami was a minister when Khaleda Zia was in power. When Bangla Bhai and Shaikh Abdur Rahman were on the rampage, and organising militant activities, then the BNP claimed that it was stage-managed by the media.”
He further said the BNP had tried to hide its militancy through falsehoods. “We are now observing such trends in the BNP. They won’t be able to destabilise the country by killing one or two foreigners. At least 600 people involved in arson attacks were caught red-handed,” Inu claimed.
An Italian citizen, Cesare Tavella, was gunned down in Dhaka’s diplomatic zone on September 28 while a Japanese national, Kunio Hoshi, was killed in a similar manner in Rangpur on October 3.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had hinted at a possible link of the BNP-Jamaat alliance with the killings.
“I think Khaleda and her allies are trying to shield militancy in the same way they had done when they were in power,” Inu alleged.
He further said, “According to our information, the killers are either members of the banned militant group JMB or activists of the BNP and Jamaat.”
In a Facebook post, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son and information and communications technology (ICT) affairs adviser, Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed Joy, claimed to have received “reliable information” about BNP-Jamaat’s involvement in the incidents.
However, the BNP has vehemently denied the allegations.
“We’re investigating whether these attacks (the killings of Tavella and Hoshi) were an isolated incident, or a result of a conspiracy by the BNP,” he said.
Foreign diplomats on Tuesday requested the government to provide security for their nationals living in Bangladesh.
In a different context, the information minister also disclosed that filters have been installed in GrameenPhone networks to prevent child cyber crimes.
