A Dhaka court yesterday placed suspended national team cricketer Kazi Shahadat Hossain alias Rajib on a 3-day police remand in connection with a case filed for torturing his domestic help.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Yusuf Hossain passed the order after hearing a seven-day remand prayer filed by the investigation officer, Md Shafiqur Rahman, also the officer-in-charge (investigation) of Mirpur Police Station.
Earlier, yesterday morning, police produced pacer Shahadat before the court from jail.
Shahadat, who was on the run since the injured 11-year-old domestic help was rescued, surrendered before a Dhaka court on Monday, a day after his wife was arrested, and sought bail in the case.
Police arrested his wife Jasmin Jahan Nittya from one of her relatives’ house at Malibagh in the capital early Sunday. In repose to a five-day remand prayer, Magistrate Md Yunus Khan on Sunday granted three-day remand for Nittya and asked the police to interrogate her at jail gate for three days within five working days.
On September 6, cricketer Shahadat and his wife were sued for torturing their housemaid Mahfuza Akter Happy at their Mirpur residence in the capital.
Journalist Khandaker Mozammel Hossain had filed the case with Mirpur Police Station under Section 4 (2) of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act 2000.
According to the case statement, plaintiff Mozammel found the 11-year-old with marks of injury on her face and bruises across her body in Mirpur Journalist Colony area on September 6.
He was then told by the victim that Shahadat and Nittya had been torturing her since she began working at their house around a year ago.
As she could not bear such torture any more, she fled from the residence of Shahadat. After rescuing her, journalist Mozammel took her to the police station and filed the case against the couple.
