The acting secretary-general of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, yesterday urged everyone to come together to combat militancy and extremism in the country.
“All quarters — political parties and conscious citizens — have to unite to combat the present crises, including militancy and extremism. The government must take the initiative,” he told reporters at the BNP headquarters at Naya Paltan in the city.
Asserting that militancy was “a major problem in the world today”, the BNP leader said all conscious people and believers in democracy remain united against extremism. “But it is unfortunate that it is used for dirty politics in Bangladesh,” he said.
The BNP leader apprehended that militants and extremists might rise if the country ceased to be a democracy. He reiterated that an inclusive general election under a neutral administration is a must to reach national consensus.

“We are greatly concerned over the different incidents involving extremism, including the murders of two foreigners. The nation is also worried. People are talking about militancy in different places,” he said.
Alamgir called upon the government to find out the culprits involved in the two killings, to shun the path of “petty politics” and stop harassing BNP leaders and activists.
He alleged that there was no coherence between two sections of the government over the two killings. “One is saying the ISIS was involved in the killings, while the other is denying it,” he said.
To a question from the media, he said the BNP chairperson would return home after completion of her health check-up and eye treatment.
The BNP chairperson’s adviser, Shamsuzzaman Dudu, party spokesperson Dr Asaduzzaman Ripon and organisation secretary Fazlul Haque Milon, among others, were present at the meeting.
