Engineer suspended on graft charges

RANGPUR: Superintendent Engineer (SE) of Rangpur City Corporation (RCC) Md. Emdad Hossain has been temporarily suspended on alleged charges of corruptions and irregularities, reports BSS. City Mayor Alhaj Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu yesterday passed the order by issuing a suspension letter in this connection, RCC officials said. The suspension order mentioned corruptions and irregularities like sending evaluation letters of tender documentations of various projects without properly following the rules to the Project Directors by the SE without informing the City Mayor.
The allegations of corruptions and irregularities were brought in the tender evaluation process of the ongoing City Governance Project (CGP), Municipal Governance Services Project (MGSP) and Electric Government Procurement (EGP).
The suspension letter also mentioned that the SE disqualified the lowest bidders without examining their submitted tender documents and sent his evaluation letters to the Project Directors favouring the highest bidders in getting work
orders. Besides, the SE paid advance bills to the concerned contractor before completion of the works of the Shyamasundari Canal Renovation Project while discharging his duties as the Executive Engineer of defunct Rangpur pourashava in the past, the letter mentioned.
Talking to BSS yesterday evening, the mayor said that he has temporarily suspended the SE for corruptions and irregularities in the process of implementation of various projects and violating the concerned service rules.
When asked, the SE admitted about his suspension order saying that he does not know as why he has been suspended and claimed that he has implemented all project activities in accordance with the concerned rules, policies and regulations.
