Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday inaugurated two newly built dormitories of Chittagong University (CU) through video conferencing from Ganabhaban. The two dormitories are Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall for male students and Jananettri Sheikh Hasina Hall for female students. The Prime Minister inaugurated the two dormitories at 12.00 pm at Ganabhaban where Road, Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader was also present.
Admiring the natural beauty of CU campus, the Prime Minister said, “I hope the university will run its academic activities from now on more smoothly. We are working to increase residential facilities for the students, teachers and officers of the university.” Assuring the university authorities of extending all-out cooperation, Sheikh Hasina said, “If the university undertakes any project of constructing quarters for the teachers and employees, we will take all necessary initiatives for implementation. “To build the country as per the dreams of Bangabandu and to ameliorate the nation, we should attach importance to education. It is not possible to alleviate poverty from the country without education,” the PM added. An inaugural ceremony was also held at the Chittagong District Administration Conference Hall. With CU Vice-Chancellor Prof Iftekhar Uddin Chowdury in the chair, the ceremony was attended by Chittagong Deputy Commissioner Mesbah Uddin, CU Registrar (Acting) Dr Kamrul Huda, examination controller Mustafijur Rahman and Proctor Ali Asgar Chowdhury, among others. There are about 186 seats for male students at the two-storey Bangabandu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall. On the other hand, there are 500 seats for female students at the four-storey Jananettri Sheikh Hasina Hall. The two dormitories were constructed under the supervision of Bangladesh Army. With the construction of the two dormitories, there are now 12 dormitories at CU for more than 22,000 students.
