JCD leader held in Rajshahi

UNB, Rajshahi

 Police arrested a local leader of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal from Bachhur intersection in the city on Sunday evening on sabotage charge. The arrestee is Rafiqul Islam Rabi, general secretary of JCD Rajshahi unit. Aman Ullah, officer-in-charge of Boalia Police Station, said that a team of police arrested Rabi from the area around 7:30 pm as he was a warranted accused in two sabotage cases.

Man ‘kills self’ in Sylhet   

UNB, Sylhet

A man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his house at Alapur village in Balaganj upazila on Sunday. The deceased was identified as Chad Mia Ranu, 45, son of late Sekandar Ali. Quoting family members, Sadikur Rahman, sub-inspector of Balaganj Police Station, said that Chad Mia hanged himself from the beam of his room around 2:30 pm with a scarf.  He had been suffering from mental illness, he said. On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital for an autopsy.

6,828 cases filed for traffic rule violations in capital

BSS, Dhaka

Traffic division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in their simultaneous drives on the city streets on Sunday filed 6,828 cases against different modes of vehicles for traffic rule violations. It also realised 34, 87 lakh as fine for traffic rule violations, said an official release. Of the total cases, 1229 cases were lodged for driving on wrong sides, 95 for using hydraulic horn, 10 for using hooter and beckon light and 18 others for using tinted glass. Police filed 2,935 cases against motorcycles and seized 95 others for violation of the traffic rules.  Traffic police has dumped 31 vehicles and wrecked 817 others.

Police Service Week begins

Police Service Week began in the city on Sunday. Barishal Metropolitan Police (BMP) authorities organised a colorful rally and discussion marking the day. The rally led by BMP Commissioner Md Moshref Hosen, started from the Central Shaheed Minar premises and paraded almost all the main roads of the city. A discussion was later held at Barishal Police Lines hall room with BMP Commissioner in the chair.

2 books for children launched

BSS, Dhaka

Pragati Publishers’ launched two pop-up books for children on Sunday at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) premises. The books, written by Shirshendu Mukhopadhaya, will be available at Ekushey Boi Mela-2019, from February 1 next. Renowned cartoonist Ahsan Habib attended the programme as chief guest. Both the books—‘Nishi Kobrej’ and ‘Kogramer Madhu Pandit’—belong to the horror genre and are specially made as ‘pop up’ to encourage children. Asrar Masud, proprietor of Pragati Publishers’, said a number of books of different shapes and types had been published since 2001 to encourage book reading habit among children. Another owner of Pragati Publishers’ Solaiman Parsee Faisal said children would find the books interesting for its innovative presentation. He also said currently many children are not interested to read books due to expansion of digital media.
