Bangladeshi found dead near Chuadanga border

A Bangladeshi youth was found dead inside Indian territory near Nastipur border in Damurhuda upazila yesterday morning.

The deceased was identified as Omidul Islam, 33, son of Abdul Malek of Nastipur village.

Union Parishad chairman Golam Jakaria, local Union Parishad Chairman, said that farmers spotted body at Bijoynagar in Indian side, 100 yards off Bangladesh border, in the morning and informed Border Guard of Bangladesh(BGB).

Later, Indian Police of Krishnanagar thana took away the body, he said.

On information, members of BGB visited the spot and held a meeting with Indian Border Security Force(BSF) around 11:30am to bring back the body, said LT Com Imam Hasan, commanding officer of BGB-6 battalion.

Sukumar Biswas, officer-in-charge of Damurhuda model police station, said that Omidul was accused in several drug and smuggling cases. He might have killed by rivals over smuggling related dispute.

Victim’s father said Omidul went out of house on Sunday evening after receiving a phone call and did not return home at night.

Cotton harvesting begins                in Jamalpur

Farmers in the district have started cotton harvesting with a production target of 750 metric tonnes (MTs) of seed cotton in the current season.

Sources concerned said the farmers cultivated different varieties of cotton seeds on 225 hectares of land in the district this year.

Amid a favourable climatic condition, a total of 1650 bales of cotton fibre are expected to be produced in the district.

The cash crop is being cultivated on vast char lands in Pathalia, Senerchar, Piyerpur, Banarerpar, Charjatharthapur and Chandra in Jamalpur Sadar upazila and Perojpur, Deflarchar, Savarharchar in Islampur upazila.

Abdul Majid, a farmer of Pathalia village, said, “He cultivated cotton on two bighas of land this year. He is expecting a profit of Tk 30,000 from the cropping this time.”

This year the farmers cultivated five cotton seed varieties-CB-12, CB-14, CB Hybrid-1, Rupali-1 and DM- 3.

Cotton Development Board has under taken various projects to encourage farmers to increase cotton production in the country.

Blankets distributed in Gaibandha

Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangshad (BMS), Sadar upazila command, distributed 2,000 pieces of blankets to the poor and the distressed men of Sadar upazila.

According to sources the cold wave coming from the Himalayas was sweeping over the northern districts including Gaibandha creating untold sufferings to the poor.

To mitigate their sufferings the freedom fighters (FFs) of BMS, Sadar upazila command stood beside the poor and the distressed with positive attitude and distributed 2,000 pieces of blankets to the cold victims of the upazila till January 27.

Of them, some 1,850 pieces of blankets were purchased by the solvent FFs and the rest 150 pieces were provided by the Sadar upazila administration led by UNO Uttam Kumar Roy.

On Sunday blankets were distributed to the people of Goghat village and its surrounding areas on the premises of Kamarjani Merchants’ High School of the upazila at the arrangement of the Muktijoddha Sangshad.

Head teacher of the school Faruqul Islam presided over the ceremony while Commander of Sadar upazila Muktijoddha Sangshad Ali Akbar Miah and deputy commander Khaybar Ali Mondal addressed the function among others.

Later, blankets were distributed to 250 poor and distressed people including aged women of the areas.
