A court yesterday sent a former deputy inspector general (DIG) and an ex-police super (SP), two fugitive convicts in the much-talked-about August 21 grenade attack cases, to jail upon their surrender. Judge of the Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 Shahed Nur Uddin passed the order when ex-DIG Khan Sayeed Hasan and ex-SP Obaidur Rahman Khan turned up before his court seeking bail in the case filed under the Explosive Substances Act.
Nazrul Islam stood for the convicts while Public Prosecutor Rezaur Rahman represented the state. The Speedy Trial Tribunal sentenced 19 people, including former State Minister for Home Lutfozzaman Babar and former Deputy Minister for Education Abdus Salam Pintu, to death while 19
others, including BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, to life imprisonment in two cases filed over the grenade attack on an Awami League rally in the capital on August 21, 2004.
Besides, 11 people were awarded different jail terms in the sensational cases, after a long wait for over 14 years.
Of them, Khan Sayeed Hasan and Obaidur Rahman Khan, then deputy commissioners of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, were sentenced to two years’ imprisonment and fined Tk 50,000.
