Jams and the city

Jams and the city

Uffuuuuu…….

“Uffu” is probably the first word we utter when we see cars stuck in a traffic jam. There is not even a shadow of a doubt that the government should do more to eradicate this problem. But is the government all to be blamed? The answer is probably “no”.

We should be blamed as well, for the continuous gridlocks in Dhaka city.

Many people in our country have expensive cars, and they likely want to flaunt their vehicles to other people, but one car for each and every member of the family is more than ridiculous. It is amazing to see a student going to school in a car, while her house is just on the next road.

Morning and afternoon in Dhanmondi look like a battle field. Cars here and there, people struggling to get a breath of fresh air, yelling, swearing and doing worse things that cannot be mentioned here. To top it all, the same people keep on complaining about traffic jams every day.

Jaywalking is something we don’t even bother about. We cross roads as if we are walking inside our own house. One hand is enough to stop the on-going traffic, thus, giving pedestrians the power to stop cars anytime and anywhere. Even though there are many footbridges and underpasses, people are more than reluctant to use those. And reluctant is probably an understatement.

These days, another problem we come across is driving on the wrong side of the road. The driver does not only threaten other people’s lives, but risks his own life, too.

Parking cars anywhere and everywhere is also the norm, as if the whole city is one’s own garage. It’s sad how we are destroying our city inch by inch, and then blaming the government.

There are many more things that contribute to the unbearable traffic jams, but writing about it all in one article is more than impossible.

If the government is at fault, then we are at fault too. It’s high time to stop blaming others and take responsibility for our own misdeeds.
