Despite life’s trials and tribulations, it can never be said that Bengalis don’t have a sense of humour, albeit, it may appear a bit cynical at times. From the silly antics of the hapless village ‘jola’, the sharp wit of folk legend Gopal Bhar and tales from Jasim Uddin’s ‘Bangalir Hasir Golpo’ that we heard from our grandparents, to the physical comedy of yesteryear stars such as Hasmat or Tele Samad that entertained us on TV or films, there are no dearth of ‘funnymen’ in our culture to tickle our funny bone when our need for a laugh is most dire. These days, the trend seems to be stand-up comic, and no one does it funnier than the performers of Naveed’s Comedy Club.
