The prices of essentials have shot up in the local markets of Sherpur ahead of Ramzan, which begins in the middle of this month. As a result of the price hike, the middle and low income people as well as marginal consumers have become helpless as they cannot afford to buy essential items, like spices and pulses. After visiting several shops and kitchen markets at upazila level and in the district headquarters yesterday, this correspondent found that the prices of several items had increased by Tk 10 - Tk 20 on average in the past one week. Sabina Yasmin, a housewife, said the price of chickpeas, a popular iftar item, went up to Tk 60 from Tk 50 per kg. She added that masur dal (lentils) was selling at Tk 130 against Tk 110 per kg. Onions were selling at Tk 40 against Tk 30 per kg, garlic Tk 50 against Tk 35 per kg, ginger Tk 100 against Tk 80 per kg, potatoes Tk 15 against Tk 12 per kg, brinjal at Tk 25 against Tk 15 per kg, cucumber at Tk 30 against Tk 15, cumin at Tk 400 against Tk 350 per kg, per piece of egg at Tk 8 against Tk 7, per kg, lemon at Tk 4 against Tk 3, per banana at Tk 7 against Tk 4. The prices of sugar and edible oil have also increased from Tk 1 to Tk 2. Besides, the prices of milk, fish, poultry and meat have also increased in the markets of the district, said school teacher Md Mahabub Hasan Nahid. He blamed some dishonest traders and lack of monitoring system as the chief reasons for the price hike of essential items. Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Jakir Hossain said there is a market monitoring committee to control the prices of daily essentials during Ramzan. A meeting will be held next week in this connection and a team will monitor the market to control prices of daily essentials, he added. Meanwhile, the Training Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) will open at least 14 selling centres in five upazilas of the district during Ramzan to sell daily commodities. On the other hand, the low price of rice and paddy has frustrated the farmers of the district.
