The nation observed the 50th anniversary of the martyrdom of Shaheed Asad yesterday in a befitting manner. The people of the country, on this day, recall the sacrifice of the hero of the 1969 mass upsurge that swept away the regime of the autocratic ruler President Ayub Khan. On this day in 1969, student leader Asaduzzaman was shot dead by Pakistani forces near Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) while staging protest against the then Pakistan rullers. Various socio-cultural and political organisations have organised various programmes marking the day.
President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued messages marking the day. In separate messages, they paid tributes to the memory of Shaheed Asad and prayed for salvation of his departed soul.
National Asad Day observance committee placed wreath at the monument of Shaheed Asad on Dhaka Medical College Hospital premises.
