The Sheikh Hasina government will take steps to provide housing facilities to journalists, said information minister Dr Hasan Mahmud yesterday (Sunday). “Accommodation is a basic need and the government will ensure that this need of the journalists will be met,” he said while speaking at the Meet the Reporters session, organised at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU). DRU president Ilias Hossain delivered the welcome speech and general secretary Kabir Ahmed Khan conducted the session.
Minister Hasan said the present government had talked about ensuring proper accommodation facilities for the journalists in its election manifesto. “We will implement our pledge as per the manifesto.” Hasan added that Sheikh Hasina’s government “has always been friendly to journalists”.
“That’s why we have taken steps to implement the ninth Wage Board,” he said, hinting that the government would implement the ninth Wage Board for newspapers and news agencies very soon. Hasan added that a Cabinet committee was formed earlier as part of the process to implement the Wage Board recommendations. “But as now there is a new government in power, that Cabinet committee is now required to be reconstituted with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s directives.”
