It is heartening to note that the mango trees in Rajshahi region have bloomed early this year. If the weather condition remains congenial, the region will certainly witness a good yield of mango. According to a report of this newspaper yesterday, due to absence of a continuous cold spell and dense fog, mango trees have bloomed early, right from the middle of the Bengali month of Poush. But the problem of mango preservation persists in the country.
Mango is one of the prominent fruits of our country. Fruits are vital components of the daily diet and for meeting the demand of nutrition these should be included in every meal. Bangladesh enjoys generally a sub-tropical monsoon climate. A tropical location, lush greenery, moisture-rich loamy soil and production-friendly climate—all these make it one of the notable growers of a vast range of fruits. Most of these fruits perishable in nature are available in different seasons. Though mango is available in a particular season, it has great nutritional value. Who can resist the temptation of tasting Surjapuri, Gopalbhog, Misribhog, Langra, Himsagor and Amropali varieties of mango that are available in plenty?
The problems facing the mango farmers should be addressed properly. Farmers should be provided with improved varieties of mango saplings. There are blights and other diseases that hamper mango production. So, insecticides should also be distributed among the mango growers. There are also problem of preserving mangoes. In the absence of preservation facility and cold storage, huge quantities of mango get perished triggering financial losses to the growers.
It is worrying that urban children are getting accustomed to burger and other fast foods. This is doing them more harm than good. They should be turned to fruit consumption. This will protect them from various diseases and will also reduce family budget on medicines. Diversified use of fruits should also be ensured. There is a great environmental benefit in planting fruit trees. There are fallow lands around houses of many people. Those can be brought under mango cultivation. The vast youth force can be employed in this task. It can solve unemployment problem greatly. A family can earn a substantial amount of money by selling seasonal fruits after meeting its demand.
