To celebrate the birth centenary (January 1, 1919-2019) of Nrityacharya Bulbul Chowdhury, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) and Bangladesh Nritya Shilpi Sangstha (BNSS) have jointly chalked out a yearlong programme featuring various types of events.
The inauguration ceremony of the yearlong programme will be held today at 6pm at the National Theatre Hall of BSA in Segun Bagicha of the capital. Attending the event, state minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury will inaugurate the programme.
Presided over by BSA director general Liaquat Ali Lucky, noted cultural personality Kamal Lohani and eminent human rights activist Sultana Kamal will be present as special guests at the programme. BNSS president Minu Haque will deliver the welcome speech.
The yearlong programme will feature publication of souvenirs, dance festival on Int’l Dance Day, dance drama festival, countrywide dance competition, seminar and honouring veterans.
Born in Chittagong, Rashid Ahmed Chowdhury (1 January 1919 – 17 May 1954), widely known by his stage name Bulbul Chowdhury, was a Bengali dancer of British India, and later East Pakistan. He is primarily regarded as a pioneer of modern dance in Bangladesh, as a founding figure of dance among the conservative Muslim community. Bulbul Chowdhury wrote and choreographed 70 dance dramas during his career span of about twenty years as a dancer. l
