Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday asked the inspector general of police (IGP) to recruit 50,000 more police personnel to strengthen the country’s main law enforcement agency. The PM was at a meeting with home ministry officials in the Secretariat. Besides the IGP, the chiefs of different departments of the Security Service Division and the Public Security Division of the home ministry were present at the meeting.
Public Security Division secretary Mostafa Kamal Uddin told The Independent that business structures like economic zones have increased in the past few years, so the ratio between police personnel and the population in the country was not sufficient. He said the PM has asked for more personnel in the police department to increase manpower in all the units of the law enforcement agency. “The police headquarters will soon start the required recruitment process,” he added.
During the previous term of the Sheikh Hasina government, the police department had recruited 50,000 personnel to boost its activities. At the same time, the police authorities set up several units like the Police Bureau of Counter Terrorism, Rangpur Metropolitan Police, Gazipur Metropolitan Police and Airport Armed Police Battalion.
The police department has also formed an Industrial Police Unit (Rangpur range), Range Reserve Force (RRF) of Rangpur, Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), two Security Protection Battalions, 30 In-service Training Centres, Tourist Police, Naval Police Unit as well as a number of new police stations and investigation centres by creating a number of posts.
At present, the Bangladesh Police is divided into different branches including the Police Headquarters (PHQ), Tourist Police, Range Police and Range Reserve Force (RRF), District Police, Metropolitan Police, Special Branch, Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Railway Police (GRP), Highway Police, Industrial Police (IP), Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), Special Security and Protection Battalion (SPBn), Armed Police Battalion (APBn), Airport Armed Police (AAP), Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Police Internal Oversight (PIO), River Police, Telecommunication and Information Management (T&IM), Detective Branch, Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CT), Police Staff College, Bangladesh (PSC), Bangladesh Police Academy (BPA) at Sarda and Police Training Centres (PTCs).
