Two die while extracting sand

Two workers died after falling in a crater while extracting sand from Nagor River in South Chatra village of Shibganj Upazila on Friday noon.
The deceased were identified as Khairul Sheikh, 28, son of Amjad Sheikh and Mosharof, 20, son of Mostafa. Both of them hailed form Baniachapor village in Alampur Union under Khetlal Upazila of Joypurhat district.
One of the workers was trapped in the crater when he got down investigating a faulty pipe while extracting sand, said Inspector Mizanur Rahman Khan of Shibganj Police Station.
Later, another worker went down to rescue him, but both of them buried when sand collapsed on them, he said.
Locals immediately took them to the upazila health complex where the doctors declared both of them dead, the inspector added.
12 held in anti-drug drives
UNB, Dhaka
Twelve people were arrested in anti-drug drives in Netrokona and Jashore yesterday.
In Netrakona, police arrested 11 people from Sadar Upazila, said Sadar Model Police Station's in-charge Borhan Uddin Khan.
Fifty litres of local liquor, three grams of heroin and 200 grams of hemp were seized from them, he said. Eleven cases were filed against the detainees at the Sadar Police Station.
In Jashore, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) troopers recovered 1,014 bottles of contraband cough syrup phensedyl in separate drives. Phensedyl is popular among addicts who use it as a substitute of expensive drugs and alcohol.
Jashore battalion (49 BGB) commander Lieutenant Colonel Ariful Hoque said 405 bottles of phensedyl were found abandoned during one of the drives. In separate drives, 609 more phensedyl bottles were recovered on Friday.
A man was also arrested from Shikri Math. He was named as Md Ramjan Ali, 26, son of Md Abdul Aziz of Durgapur in Sharsha Upazila.
44 held in special drives
BSS, Satkhira
Police, in special drives arrested 44 people from eight upazilas of the district in last 12-hour ending at 8am yesterday morning.
Sources with the district police said they were picked up from different areas of the district.
The arrested people are accused in several cases, including charges of subversive activities, filed with different police stations in the district.
The arrested were sent to jail.
