Dipu Moni for stopping current net production

our correspondent, Chandpur

Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni has said stopping production of current net is needed to stop rampant hunting of jatka (hilsa fry) and mother hilsha.

“Only detaining accused fishermen will not enough, we have to first stop the production of current net to save the jatka and mother hilsha. We have to bring the people, who are producing current net, to justice,” she said.  We hope we would be able to save our national asset hilsha through the coordinated effort, she added.

Dipu Moni said these while addressing a two-day workshop on ‘Developing hilsha and its management strategy’ at Chandpur deputy commissioner’s office on Friday evening. Dr Abdul Wahab, team leader of Ecofish Bangladesh Project, was in the chair.

Financed by USAID, the workshop was organised by the Department of Fisheries (DoF), Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI), and WorldFish, with the assistance of Ecofish Bangladesh.

Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Md Raisul Alam Mondal, director general of DoF Abu Sayed Md Rashedul Haque, director general of BFRI Dr Yahia Mahmud and WorldFish Bangladesh country director Dr Malcolm Dickson addressed the programme, among others.
